There are more than fifty Kashmiri detenues in the district jail Kathua and all of them are facing the worst type of treatment from the jail authorities which has made their jail life a hell. They are kept under the jail lock ups continuously for 23 hours and allowed to move out of the barracks for an hour only resulting in development of various ailments and health hazards. They are not allowed to meet their relatives as per the jail manual once in a week but only one meeting to each detenue is allowed in 15 days. Every new detenue soon after reaching the jail premises, is completely disrobed and kept in open before all including the visitors from Kashmir and mercilessly beaten before allowing them to go into the jail. In this scorching heat, only one water cooler is provided for two barracks which is quite insufficient with the result the life of inmates has turned into a hell. The food and vegetables provided to the Kashmiri imates is much below the standard as provided in the jail manual. The healthcare is more than insufficient resulting in deterioration of their health conditions. Jama’at-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir vehemently condemns the inhumane attitude of the Kathua jail authorities towards the Kashmiri detenues and appeals the human rights forums to visit the jail and take necessary measures for the protection of the human rights of the inmates.
